Foot Rot, Tinea Pedis and Foot fungus. It is called many names and is known by many. How do you prevent and stop foot fungus?

There are three types of foot fungus, they are mocassin, interdigital and vesicular.

1. A moccasin-type infection of athlete's foot can begin with a minor irritation, dryness, itching, or scaly skin. As it develops, the skin may thicken and crack. This infection can involve the entire sole of the foot and extend onto the sides of the foot

2. Interdigital, also called toe web infection, this is the most common kind of athlete's foot. It usually occurs between the two smallest toes. This form of athlete's foot can cause itching, burning, and scaling and the infection can spread to the sole of the foot.

3. Vesicular is the least common kind of athlete's foot. The condition usually begins with a sudden outbreak of fluid-filled blisters under the skin. Most often, the blisters develop on the underside of the foot. However, they also can appear between the toes, on the heel, or on the top of the foot.

To start with prevention, we must first understand how we would contract it. Foot Fungus typically thrive in wet and moist areas, this includes shoes and bathroom floors. So it is important that we practise proper foot hygiene, ensuring that we do not allow tinea pedis to thrive in our shoes. In common bathrooms, it is always important to wear a bathroom slipper to minimise the contact from the floor. This is so as it is possible that someone with foot rot may have walked before you and there are fungus on the floor. Tinea Pedis will then enter your system through tiny cuts on the sole of your feet. That’s why foot hygiene is so important.

What are some of the ways that we can cure it? Some strategies include soaking your feet in 50/50 of vinegar and Listerine original, it helps to soothe the feet. Some serious cases would involve flaky skin and pain, one interesting way to counter the flaky skin would be to apply Vick’s vapour rub onto your feet. It helps to reduce the peeling of the skin. Another way would be to crush a few cloves of garlic, add olive oil and soak both feet in the mixture.  These are some of the home remedies that have proven effective to many.

If home remedies do not work for you, it is advised to consult a doctor or purchase over the counter medications. One should not take foot fungus lightly as it may become a painful condition.
