The course provides a fundamental survey of Asian Art from ancient times to the onset of colonialism and Western influence in the 19th Century. Spanning the major civilisations of Asia, namely China, Japan, India, Southeast Asia and West Asia (the Middle East), this course will cover painting, sculpture, architecture as well as decorative arts. The origin of Buddhist art, Chinese landscape painting, Japanese prints, great architecture such as the Taj Mahal, and the impact of colonialism are some of the themes that will be explored in this course.
