Even though Ms Linda Lim retired from her 9 to 6 office job only in last November, the 68 year-old is no stranger to active ageing. When she was working, Linda took time off her hectic schedule to volunteer, attend courses and listen to talks. “I want to stay relevant to the society. Learning has always been my passion and I get to make good friends from the sessions I attended,” she chirped happily.

Currently, Linda volunteers by helping the less fortunate learn and read English. She enjoys reaping the many benefits of volunteering. “You can give back to society, even in small ways. Also, when you help others, you are learning at the same time.” The joys of volunteering fills Linda with happiness that she would want to encourage others to join her in taking up a voluntarily vocation. “I suggest that you should get started if you have yet to do so! It doesn’t take a whole lot of time and it is a good way to help yourself and your community.”

Linda also holds a very positive view on retirement, “I feel like I have just started a new chapter in my life after retirement. For example, I now have more time for myself, so I can attend full-day talks to feed my knowledge.” She is currently actively participating in various learning programmes. One of such is a sketching course by C3A’s learning partner – Fei Yue. “This is my first time dabbling in arts! I never knew I can draw until I started the course. Now, I can sketch portraits confidently and appreciate painting works by others.” Apart from art classes, Linda also attends C3A’s Intergenerational Learning Programme (ILP).

Linda loves being around her friends and it is in her nature to make new friends easily. While it might be easy to email friends or chat with relatives over social media such as Facebook, Linda would much rather hold physical conversations. Social wellness is a vital element to active ageing – one of the 7 Dimensions of Wellness, as a wider social circle and support network will aid us in our ageing journey.
