The Singapore Polytechnic course Learn to Use an Android Phone Effectively targeted at helping seniors navigate the various functions of their mobile devices was taught at the Loving Heart Multi-Service Centre located at Yuhua, Jurong in March 2018. Twenty-five seniors benefited from this course which was held in their neighbourhood.

 

Getting older but still going strong

 

Sprouting a head of slivery grey hair, Irene Lim was one of the first senior students who attended the class. At 72, Irene Lim may appears to take life easy, but she is keenly aware of the effects of ageing and aims to keep herself active.

 

"I believe in lifelong learning to stay relevant and want to keep myself occupied. I may be getting older but still going strong." Irene declared proudly.

 

Not wanting to be at home doing nothing, she kept herself busy with volunteering work after retiring from her job as an Administrative Assistant in 2010. It was after some encouragement from her friends that she decided to make use of her SkillFuture Credits to upgrade herself recently.

 

Irene is particularly pleased that she can now use the photo editing application on her phone. She can even compose a photo collage on her mobile device with ease; something she never thought she could do before.

 

Stay connected with my friends when we learn together

 

Now she has her eyes on finding courses related to cooking, floral arrangement and TCM. Irene firmly believes that she is going to enjoy learning with her friends.

 

"Taking a course not only help me to upgrade myself and to pass time but also enable me to stay connected with my friends. I can always expect a lot of laughter when I am learning with friends." She let out a laugh when asked about the benefits on learning.

 

"I will and I want to continue to learn with my friends," she said.
