On the lookout for new opportunities

Mdm Jong Syn Chun

"Helping others makes them happy and that makes me happy too."

Having worked for several years, Mdm Jong Syn Chun felt that it was time for her to take a break. The formal aerospace executive decided to retire and engage in activities that she was interested in.

"After being in the workforce for many years, I was getting tired and decided that it was time to retire," she shares.

Mdm Jong thinks that one should be open to exploring opportunities and not be confined to the four walls at home. As she was interested to upgrade herself and remain active, Mdm Jong decided to be more proactive and visited a National Silver Academy (NSA) roadshow to find out more.

Her learning journey then started with HealthAct – Your First Wealth is Health organised by Society for WINGS. Through this course, Mdm Jong was introduced to different ways to better manage one’s health and the common illnesses. Since HealthAct, Mdm Jong had also registered for Live360 and is interested in other courses such as gardening and Money Act.

Look good, feel good

At times, Mdm Jong and her friends would come together to exercise and share about healthy and good food. She had also been encouraging her friends to attend grooming-related courses for instance.

"We need to take care of our complexion and skin to live in style and look good," she says.

A meaningful act

After noticing that the seniors at the hospital were often lost and struggled with understanding certain instructions, Mdm Jong decided to volunteer at a hospital to provide them with the necessary support. This includes accompanying the seniors to the hospitals.

In fact, having completed a hairdressing course, Mdm Jong mentioned that she had previously cut her husband’s hair and is also interested in doing charity cuts!

"Helping others makes them happy and that makes me happy too," she expresses.

All in all, Mdm Jong finds volunteering very meaningful and is always on the lookout for more volunteering opportunities. Ultimately, she believes that one should put their skills to good use by giving back to the society.

**Special thanks to Mdm Jong Syn Chun who accepted our interview, we wish her all the very best in her active ageing journey.
