Stay Connected For Social Wellness

social4

There is no better time for seniors to pursue a life of adventure and pleasure with plenty of social get-together and fun than during the retirement years. Not only do seniors have time on their side to enjoy themselves but are also in good physical and financial health to do so. Maintaining a strong social support network is therefore important. Besides the good companionship, friends can also be a great source of inspiration and motivation.

Be Social

A socially well person is one who takes an active role in the community, and encourages effective communication among community members. He or she is also living in harmony with the environment and the community. Volunteering is a step in the direction of social wellness because it gives seniors a sense of satisfaction and purpose. So too is expanding one’s social circle and support network to include not just family and friends, but also people from clubs and professional organisations.

So say goodbye to retirement blues and Empty Nest Syndrome, and get on with life. Many more avenues abound for seniors to increase their social circle and add value to living:

  1. Have fun
Go out and visit art galleries and museums, maybe even catch a movie or a play. Have dinners and picnics with family and friends, or simply spend your day pampering your grandchildren.
  2. Hobby
Gardening, quilting, baking or learning a foreign language are all healthy pursuits for seniors who now have plenty of time on their hands. With little or no career or family responsibilities, you can now pick up hobbies which you had previously wanted to pursue.
  3. Involvement
Get yourself involved in voluntary welfare organisations. Your expertise can be tapped in a meaningful way.
  4. Low-Impact Sport
Golf is a favourite with many, as it not only provides much needed exercise but is also played in a group and provides companionship.
  5. Travel
This is the one thing that we all want to do but can never get enough of. Well, there is no better time than now to follow your heart’s desire and visit your dream cities. Join a group tour and make new friends.
  6. Technology
In today’s digital age, staying in touch with family, friends and colleagues could not be easier. Anybody can be technologically savvy at just a touch of button. In fact, the conventional mobile telephone has now evolved into a highly innovative digital device that can both capture and send photographs electronically. You could be on cruise ship in Alaska with an iceberg “selfie” you had just excitedly captured, and which you could send immediately to your daughter in Singapore via her mobile phone.

Many organisations like RSVP, NLB and Fei Yue Family Central provides technology and social networking courses especially catered to seniors.

Surely age is just a number, so keep on learning and stay connected.
