With recycling and upcycling trends growing, many are looking at how they can make practical items for their own daily use – without having to buy them, or adding to the consumerism around us. This workshop teaches participants how to sew their own bags for different uses.

Trainer's Profile

Chan Sook Cheng, Rosie

Rosie Chan has over 40 years of experience in the textile industry as a business owner, fiber artist, educator and trainer. She has designed, organised and conducted numerous fiber art and sewing courses both at international and local levels. These include creative textiles courses in MOE schools and the National Institute of Education, training teachers who would teaching sewing classes in schools. Rosie has conducted quilting and sewing courses in Beijing, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok Taiwan and Hong Kong, and exhibited at international quilt shows. Rosie was one of three principal Singapore quilters who supported Mediacorp in its highly successful Fabric of the Nation Project. She joined up some of the patchwork blocks received into giant-sized quilts for display at the HDB. More recently, she is the trainer for Society for WINGS’ Buckets of Love project where women are taught to sew bucket hats for women with cancer. Rosie also volunteered to sew masks during the Covid pandemic, and also pillow cases for Muhamadiyah Boys Home.

Joyce Mok Chiu-Fui

Joyce Mok Chiu-Fui has over 40 years of experience as an academic, educator and trainer. She is presently teaching Fashion and Design – Wearable Art as a Second Skin at the National Institute of Education, and also a Practicum Supervision for Diploma in Special Education Trainee Teachers. She has also conceptualized and taught a wide repertoire of courses in the areas of food and nutrition, textiles and clothing studies among other subjects. A Colombo Plan Scholar (1977), Joyce has served on the International Federation of Home Economics (IFHE)’s Executive Committee Asian Regional Association of Home Economics as President and Senior Advisory Committee Member, and also as President of the Association of Home Economists – Singapore
