“Real Steel” is a science fiction action film that takes place in the near future. It is the age where humans are entertained by robot fights instead of human ones. Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman) is a former boxer who pits his robots in underground fights and exhibitions. Having made a slew of bad choices resulting in the loss of his fighters, and with a running debt under his belt, this renegade is on the run for the first part of the film. That is until he finds out that his ex-girlfriend has died in an accident, leaving him the custody of his 11-year-old son, Max (Dakota Goyo).
Not wanting anything to do with Max initially, Charlie strikes a deal with Max’s wealthy relatives, Uncle Marvin (James Rebhorn) and Aunt Debra (Hope Davis), who want full custody of Max. As part of the deal, Charlie receives $50,000 on the condition that he has to keep Max for three months while the couple vacation in Italy and another $50,000 when he brings Max to them in New York in August. Charlie then used the money to purchase a second-hand World Robot Boxing league robot, Noisy Boy, and he arranges for it to fight. He ends up losing and is at his wits’ end once again.
Charlie and Max then troll the junkyard for robot parts to create their own robot, but Max stumbles upon an old robot that saves his life, and he insists on keeping it. Bailey (Evangeline Lilly), Charlie’s long time friend, helps them fix the old robot up. This robot, Atom, not only brings both the father and son together, but makes waves in the World Robot Boxing league. Viewers will be so engrossed that they might want their very own robot at the end of this highly entertaining film!
