Rocky II
Sylvester Stallone's follow-up to the runaway success of Rocky (1976) continues to chronicle the boxer’s ascension in his career.
In Rocky (the first in the series), Stallone is introduced as an unknown club fighter who later soars in popularity after a magnificent match against the formidable and undefeated World Heavyweight Champion, Apollo Creed.
Though the match ends with no clear winner, Creed eventually defeats Rocky with a win based on points. Soon after, Rocky learns that he suffers from a detached retina which could lead to permanent blindness, and promises his wife to retire from boxing. Creed, however, remains dissatisfied with an ambiguous win against Rocky. He becomes obsessed with the idea of a rematch, and schemes to lure the reluctant Rocky back into the ring.
Despite risks to his health and the promises made to his wife, Rocky’s own passion demands that he return. What follows is a convincing portrayal of a man who, against all odds, struggles to save his dream and maintain his personal identity.
The second instalment of the Rocky saga continues to highlight the tenacity and resilience of the man and his will to survive. The Rocky series was never just about boxing, but about the strength to fight for one’s dream. This is the true draw of Rocky.
