Did you know that sea monsters roamed the earth – or rather, the ocean – some 150 million years ago during the Jurassic period? Svalbard, a massive group of islands in the Artic, is where much of the discovered fossilised remains of sea monsters is concentrated.
In Death of a Sea Monster, a National Geographic team follows a group of scientists to unearth and piece together the mystery of how one such prehistoric sea creature lived and died. The sea monster in question, the ichthyosaur, was a dolphin-like sea creature with razor teeth. With a body span of more than 5 metres, it is one of the largest predators that ever lived in the sea.
The process of excavating, transporting and studying the ichthyosaur skeleton is fascinating to watch. The scientists not only piece together the story of one sea monster, but also offer a glimpse of the period where other prehistoric sea creatures ruled the oceans amidst the harsh Artic environment.
