How to Walk
“When you walk, arrive with every step. That is walking meditation. There’s nothing else to it.” These opening lines of How to Walk by Zen Master, Thich Nhat Hanh, may appear transcendental, but when asked why he does walking meditation, the answer is simple – he likes it and every step makes him happy.
At the heart of walking meditation is the mindfulness or awareness of the act of walking. This awareness brings joy and inner peace. The mind is calm and it focuses on the present. Mindfulness and concentration are vital as they can enhance our breathing and our steps. Mindfulness is the continuous practice of deeply touching every moment of daily life. When we walk through the door, we know we are going through a door because our minds are with our actions.
In this busy modern world, we often stress ourselves with worries and anxiety. Perhaps it’s time to look for means to free our minds from these negative thoughts and walking mediation might be the antidote for some of us.
