SINCE losing most of his sight five years ago, Mr Lim Kian Seng has struggled to clean his one-room rental flat ahead of Chinese New Year.
Yesterday, the 60-year-old former home renovation contractor was given a helping hand by student volunteers from Singapore Polytechnic who cleaned his Chua Chu Kang flat and even gave it a fresh coat of paint.
He also received one of the festive food packs distributed by the South West Community Development Council (CDC) to 300 needy families in the area under its Festive Cheers @ South West programme. The two-month programme, which is running for a seventh year, will help more than 2,700 low-income families and elderly residents in the district before it ends next month.
“I’m very grateful to the students and the CDC people, who always come around to visit me,” said Mr Lim.
Senior Minister of State for Health and Manpower Amy Khor joined in the volunteers’ visits and pitched in to help paint Mr Lim’s flat, along with Member of Parliament for Chua Chu Kang GRC Alex Yam. Dr Khor, who is Mayor of the district, said: “We hope to bring festive cheer to vulnerable residents, like elderly and low-income families, to uplift their lives and prevent social isolation.”
The rest of the 190 volunteers came from the Yew Tee Grassroots Organisations and online jobs portal JobsCentral, one of the event’s sponsors. They distributed food packs and helped to clean and paint 17 other households.
Mr Yam noted that such events give residents, especially students, a chance to meet people less fortunate than themselves. First-year SP student Joline Goh, 17, one of Mr Lim’s helpers, said: “It’s a good way to bond with my friends while helping others.”
