After dropping out of medical school, Ovidia Yu wrote several award-winning short stories and plays. She started writing her Aunty Lee Mysteries featuring a kaypoh, good-hearted Peranakan cook-sleuth after her mother’s cancer diagnosis triggered an ‘Aunty’ support system.

All of Ovidia’s mysteries are set in Singapore—present and past--and show the habits, hearts and values of law-abiding, food-obsessed, Singaporeans doing their best to solve ghastly murders and live good lives, often with comic consequences.

In this conversation, Ovidia shares about writing in, about and beyond Singapore, including the routines, rituals and rules in her writing journey that led her to win the SEA Write Award 2016.
