Join noted young local cellist, Loke Hoe Kit, as he uncovers the forgotten illustrious history of Victoria Memorial Hall & Theatre - Singapore’s premiere historic performing arts venue – as well as the concert scene of pre-independent Singapore.
This talk will debunk the myth that colonial Singapore was a ‘cultural desert’. Legends like Heifetz, Elman, Rubinstein, Arrau, Piatigorsky, Feuermann and Britten were amongst the numerous historic classical music stars who performed here. Victoria Memorial Hall, which was refurbished to be a concert hall in 1930, was one of the great pre-war concert venues of the Far East. As we celebrate the bicentenary of Singapore’s modern founding, much history waits to be rediscovered.
Hoe Kit will also be treating the audience to a short performance, accompanied on the piano by a special guest, Dr Chang Tou Liang. This is an event that Singapore history and music lovers should not miss!
