Khmer classical dance originated as a form of ritual prayer that was practised in the sandstone temples of ancient Angkor (9–15th centuries). Nurtured in the court as a form of entertainment, it is renowned for its graceful hand gestures, arched backs, bent knees, curled toes and fingers, and hyper-flexed elbows. The dances often tell stories of mythical realms populated by gods and kings, demons and fantastical beings.
