According to Hoarders, an American documentary series, hoarders are people who suffer from ‘Compulsive Hoarding’. It is a mental disorder marked by an obsessive need to acquire and keep things, even if the items are worthless, hazardous, or unsanitary. More than 3 million people in the world are compulsive hoarders!
The series depicts real-life stories of people who struggle to part with their massive amount of hoarded belongings that often bring harm and destruction to their families and people around them. Each episode relates two stories of families who are desperately in need of help. Some face eviction from the landlord or local authorities; some face the threat of divorce by partners who are angry and worn out by their hoarding behaviour; others risk having their children taken by Child Protective Services; or worst, some face jail time due to animal cruelty. Most of the time, the clutter and garbage in the hoarders’ houses reach such apocalyptic proportions that will leave one in utter disbelief.
Educational, insightful, at times gross, brutal, dramatic but also compelling, Hoarders gives us a glimpse into the lives of compulsive hoarders and how professionals try to help improve their lives.
