Discover the hidden and lesser-known stories of Balestier through an exciting array of activities at Singapore Heritage Festival 2019, including an interactive art installation, treasure hunts and the refreshed Balestier Heritage Trail!

Make Your Own Badge: Icons of Balestier

 

Join illustrators from the Lianhe Zaobao Student Correspondents Club in designing your own button badge! Decorate your badge with different occupational icons symbolic of the Balestier estate and learn more about life during the early days

Children’s World @ SYSNMH: A Glimpse of Balestier

 

Be a young explorer for a day and uncover a glimpse of Balestier in the past as you navigate your way through a series of interactive activity stations with students from Ngee Ann Polytechnic!

Tiger Cartoon Drawing Workshop
(Supported by Studymore)

 

Did you know? Once upon a time, wild tigers roamed Balestier and it was common for residents to find tiger tracks outside their houses in the morning. Create your own cartoon tiger comic strip and pay tribute to Balestier’s wild past in this workshop led by local cartoonist, Winsun!

“NiuBiZi and HIs friends” Cartoon Drawing Workshop 
(Supported by Huang Yao Foundation)

 

“NiuBiZi” is an iconic cartoon character created by renowned artist and scholar Huang Yao in the 1930s, and was used in satirical portrayals of social and political issues back in the day. Learn how to draw the “NiuBiZi” cartoon in this workshop led by local illustrator, Anngee Neo! Best suited for children 8 years and above.

Stories for Children: Wu Song Fights a Tiger
(Supported by Speak Mandarin Campaign and Speak Good English Movement)

 

Embark on a literary adventure in our popular interactive storytelling sessions conducted by local authors and veteran storytellers! Delve into traditional fables such as the tale of “Wu Song Fights a Tiger” from the Chinese Classic, “Water Margin”.

Permanent Gallery Guided Tour

 

Join us for a guided tour of Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall and hear the stories behind this century-old villa that trace Dr. Sun Yat Sen’s revolutionary activities in Southeast Asia. Gain valuable insights on the impact of the 1911 Revolution on Singapore, as well as Singapore’s contributions to the Revolution.

Special Exhibition Guided Tour

Balestier Trail Plus! – Healthcare Edition

 

The Balestier Heritage Trail is back and better than ever! Embark on the newly refreshed Balestier Heritage Trail to uncover the rich history and origins of Balestier from as early as 1835. From landmarks like Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) to the Maha Sasanaramsi Burmese Buddhist Temple, delve into the architectural and cultural developments of Balestier and discover the unknown stories behind these places.

Monument Tour

 

Gazetted as a National Monument in 1994, Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall was previously the Southeast Asia headquarters of Dr. Sun Yat Sen’s Chinese Revolutionary Alliance (Tong Meng Hui). It was in this villa that Dr. Sun planned three uprisings before the successful Wuchang Uprising of 1911. Uncover the full story of the memorial hall in this monument tour, and learn more about its architectural story and revolutionary history!
