Gendang Akustika is a Malay urban folk music ensemble in Singapore that will be celebrating its 10th anniversary next year. In light of new beginnings, the ensemble will set foot on a different trajectory in its music, crafting a new aesthetic founded upon traditional elements and nuances of Malay urban folk music. Led by music director Syafiqah ‘Adha, join the ensemble as it shares a glimpse of this new journey, through original compositions that will bound to stir your soul.
About Syafiqah 'Adha Sallehin
Syafiqah 'Adha Sallehin obtained her bachelor’s degree in music (with honours) and her Master of Music in Music Composition from Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music (YSTCM), at the National University of Singapore in 2013 and 2016 respectively. She received the Goh Chok Tong Youth Promise Award by MENDAKI (2010), in recognition of her pursuit for excellence in music.
Syafiqah is deeply passionate about traditional Malay music and has been an active performing accordionist in the genre for nine years. She is the accordionist and music director of Gendang Akustika, a traditional-contemporary Malay music ensemble in Singapore. Syafiqah is also a passionate educator and has conducted traditional Malay music workshops in schools and lectured a world music module on traditional Malay music in YSTCM. She is currently the instructor of the Malay Fusion Ensemble in School of the Arts (SOTA).
